CLUB HISTORY
TANDRIDGE GOLF CLUB

A brief history by John Wilson

A good 18 hole Golf Course is needed in this neighbourhood. This was the opening paragraph of a printed circular letter sent to many local residents on 22 November 1922 by Sir H J Gibson, KCB. It outlined a proposal to build a new course on a site on the Tandridge Park estate, at an estimated cost of £10,000 for the course and clubhouse. At that time the only other course in the area was the present nine holes at Limpsfield Chart on which no play was allowed on Sundays, a considerable disadvantage for the keen weekend golfer. Backing for the scheme was sufficient to enable the land to be purchased within a year at a very reasonable price from the owner Sir Bernard Greenwell, and construction began.

The course was designed by Mr H S Colt, a distinguished golf course architect. One of the features of his deign was over 300 bunkers, many of which have been subsequently filled in to save on maintenance costs. Otherwise the course, which was played by the Trustees for the first time on 6th June 1924 and opened for general play on 1st October 1924, is still very much as originally laid out, with two loops of nine holes from the clubhouse. Part of the land used for the course included the old TANDRIDGE village cricket ground, and today - 75 years later - the cricket square can still be seen on the seventh hole because the grass is different from its surrounds. The original course was much more open than now, due to the growth of the extensive woodlands. The hurricane of October 1987 caused loss of thousands of trees, but we did have the benefit of reopening some of the original views from the course.

The first entrance fees were fixed at 10 guineas for men, eight guineas for ladies, with annual subscription of eight and six guineas respectively. Green fees for visitors were five shillings per day, and caddies received 1/10d per round. The local bus company was asked to help the Club by reducing the fare from Limpsfield Common to the course from 4d to 3d! Not many arrive by bus now!
